Waipahu 2000 Update

In the Spring of 1993, representatives from various Waipahu community groups began work on a long-range plan for Waipahu. This nine-month planning effort produced a community master plan called Waipahu 2000 Update. The group of representatives, called the Waipahu 2000 Update Committee, was represented by 15 community, business and labor organizations. PBR HAWAII was retained by Amfac/JMB Hawaii, Inc. to assist these community representatives in preparing a master plan for Waipahu Town. After approximately 15 evening meetings held over 8 months and attended by over 60 individuals, the Waipahu 2000 Update Committee published a master plan. This effort received an award from the ASLA Hawai‘i Chapter in 1995.

Extensive community-based planning efforts resulted in community approval of the Mill Town Center Business and Industrial park (since built), and the Mill Town Center Commercial Park projects. PBR HAWAII prepared the Final Environmental Impact Statement (March 1997) and assisted Amfac in obtaining the necessary governmental approvals for the 25-acre commercial and park site, which includes: a commercial lot; a park/open space expansion of Hans L’Orange Park; the preservation of the Old Waipahu Store; a new YMCA; a Filipino Community Center; and a proposed Heritage Park and Museum. The Waipahu Town Heritage Plan won an APA Hawai‘i Chapter Award in 1997.
