With 39 years of professional landscape architectural experience, Mr. Chung has been involved with landscape architectural projects ranging in scale and complexity from large scale site planning to detailed hardscape and planting design. He has worked closely with federal, state, and county agencies as well as architects and private sector clients throughout his career, with projects in California, Hawai‘i, American Samoa, Guam, and South Korea. Mr. Chung’s education and experience in both architecture and landscape architecture contributes his deep understanding of human spatial standards, human interactions in outdoor environments, bio-philic design, and urban design.
Mr. Chung’s work has reshaped social and cultural spaces throughout the State of Hawai‘i with robust and well-used landscapes that resulted from projects such as the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Campus Middle School and the Physical Education and Athletic Center, the University of Hawai‘i: Hilo Entry Plaza and Student Services Building, the Diamond Head State Monument Master Plan Update, the Fort Street Mall Renovation, and the Thomas Square Park Master Plan and Renovation.
As a LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design + Construction, Mr. Chung is capable of synthesizing complex systems with design to create sustainable and welcoming outdoor spaces. He was the Principal-In-Charge for the Ward Village Streetscape Design Concepts Package, which received the 2018 Professional Award of Excellence in Planning and Analysis from the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. An expert at integrating planting design into placemaking, he designed the outdoor gathering spaces at Leeward Community College Educational and Innovation Instructional Facility project to be drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and also function as bio-filtration planters; the project received the 2016 Implementation Award from the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Planning Association. He was also the Principal-In-Charge of the Līhu‘e Civic Center First Phase Improvements project, which received the 2016 Transportation Award from the Hawaiʻi Chapter of the American Planning Association for its pedestrian-friendly and ecologically-sensitive streetscape and landscape design.
