In 2000, PBR HAWAII was part of the design team which transformed the Center into a modern shopping and dining destination surrounded by lush native Hawaiian gardens and ponds. With over 200 shops on four levels, Ala Moana is the world’s largest open-air shopping center. As part of a team, which included Pua Kanahele, PBR HAWAII worked to create a native Hawaiian garden experience within the Center.
Authentic native Hawaiian garden settings were created throughout the central mall concourse. A Hawaiian rainforest garden shades shoppers as they rest. An agricultural garden and taro lo‘i (a pond with varieties of taro plants), provides an area for play and exploration. Interpretive signs provide visitors an opportunity to become aware of native Hawaiian plants and culture. The changes have helped to make Ala Moana more than a shopping mall; it has become a visitor destination in its own right.
