The Ala Moana Elevated Pedestrian Walkway involved building a mauka-makai oriented “land bridge” to link paths on both sides of Ala Moana Boulevard. Mauka of Ala Moana Boulevard, Victoria Ward Limited is developing Ward Village, which will create at least 4,500 new residential condominiums. Within a short walking distance, the nearby future Kakaʻako Rail Transit Station is expected to host about 2,650 pedestrians and cyclists each day once it realizes its full potential. The elevated walkway safely connects pedestrians and bicyclists from these future developments to Kewalo Basin, Kakaʻako Waterfront Park, and Ala Moana Beach Park. In addition, the walkway will improve quality of life with increased transportation choices and greater connectivity to recreation areas, jobs, and other critical destinations. PBR HAWAII worked with the design and engineering team to develop the bridge alignment and designed the landscape and irrigation of the landing areas on both ends of the bridge. Dwarf Hau, loulu, naupaka, and pōhinahina are some of the native plants incorporated in the landscape design.
