PBR HAWAII prepared an environmental impact statement and processed a change in zoning for “Live, Work, Play ‘Aiea,” the proposed redevelopment of the former Kamehameha Drive In property in Aiea. The rezoning from the B-2 Community Business district to the BMX-3 Community Business Mixed-Use district will enable the creation of a mixed-use residential and commercial development with up to 1,500 residential units, 220,000 square feet of commercial floor area, and a kama‘aina hotel. The site is less than a quarter mile from the planned Pearlridge Transit Station and the project incorporates design elements to encourage walking and bicycling to/from the station. In 2014, the American Planning Association Hawai‘i Chapter recognized Live, Work, Play ‘Aiea with its Outstanding Planning Award.
