PBR HAWAII’s design intent for the Smith-Beretania Park in the City and County of Honolulu’s Chinatown special design district was to capture a sense of old Hawai‘i. To achieve, this large wrought iron gates denote park entrances and capped moss rock walls with wrought iron fencing enclose the park and provide security.
One of the significant challenges of this project was to design a viable park that met the needs of the city, businesses, and public. The park is a raised park that sits above a lower parking level. Existing mature monkey pod trees lining the park’s perimeter were preserved by working with the architect to create planter wells. Other challenges included weight load and planting constraints of a large roof top planter.
