Landscape Design and Integration of the Natural Growing Environment
PBR HAWAII has undertaken Landscape Architectural projects of various scope, size, and character. Our projects range from private developments including single-family and multi-family housing projects, as well as resort, commercial, office and industrial developments to public institutions, highways, airports, parks, and recreational areas.
As Landscape Architects, PBR HAWAII’s staff has worked effectively as part of a consultant team, in the role of prime consultant, as well as a supporting role to the consultant team. It is our goal to work closely with the client, the project architect and other project consultants to design outdoor spaces that complement the project’s overall design concept.
Landscape Architecture concerns itself with the design and integration of the natural growing environment. It focuses on plant selection and placement, irrigation requirements, grading and soil mixtures, as well as site furnishings and amenities such as seating, steps, lighting, paving, and fountains. Specific emphasis is placed upon the importance of the design process and on-going client review to develop schemes and concepts that integrate all of these components.
In all of our projects, PBR seeks to develop a useful landscape plan that not only improves the aesthetic enjoyment and maintenance of the project, but also gives special consideration to the economic and practical use of the site.

Featured Project Ala Moana Shopping Center
Project Specifications
- Location Honolulu, O‘ahu
In 2000, renovations transformed Ala Moana Shopping Center into an open-air shopping and dining experience surrounded by lush native Hawaiian gardens and ponds. With over 20 shops on four levels, Ala Moana is currently the world’s largest outdoor shopping center. PBR HAWAII was part of the design team, including Pua Kanahele, selected to create the open air, native Hawaiian garden experience.
Various types of Hawaiian gardens dapple the shopping center. A Hawaiian rainforest garden shades shoppers as they rest. An agricultural garden and taro lo’i (a pond with varieties of taro plants), provides an area for play and exploration. The landscape and signs give visitors an opportunity to become aware of native Hawaiian plants and culture. The changes have helped to make Ala Moana more than a shopping mall; it has become a visitor destination in its own right.
As the mall continued to grow, PBR remained involved with the expansion. PBR HAWAII was also involved with the landscape design of the addition of 200,000 square feet on three levels of retail space, as well as the planning, design, and construction of the Nordstrom expansion.
